Have there been times in your life where you’ve felt slightly off but you weren’t necessarily able to identify why? Maybe you were more timid in meetings than usual? Or perhaps you couldn’t hear your intuition clearly? Maybe you had more clumsy moments or long bouts of a low sex drive? All of these feelings and behaviors can be linked to your chakras.

What Are Chakras? 

Chakras are the body’s energy centers that help regulate all of its processes. There are seven main chakras, positioned from the base of the spine to the top of the head. Each one has its own vibrational frequency and color, controls a specific bodily function, and influences certain emotions. Getting to know your chakras, being able to identify when they are blocked, and learning how to remove that blockage are foundational skills for self-knowledge. Like meditation and yoga, your chakras connect you with your spiritual self. 

When energy is flowing freely through your chakras, your body, mind, and soul are in alignment, and the voice of your authentic self is clear as a bell. Blocked chakras cause physical discomfort or pain and emotional distress. 

While each chakra has its own associated body part and expressions, you’ll know your chakras are well-balanced when you’re at peace, confident and capable of bringing your authentic self to every room you find yourself in.

Getting To Know Your Chakras

The seven main chakras – from root to crown – are root, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye and crown. Keep reading to find out more about each chakra, including their associated color, body location, crystal and essential oil. And to help you learn more about chakras and how to balance each one, make sure you take advantage of these resources and practices:

Crystals: Going back to ancient civilizations, crystals have been celebrated for their healing abilities. Your body and crystals both have energetic vibrations and thus, by using a chakra’s associated crystal, you’re able to align your vibration with that of the stone. Once you choose which crystal you need (based upon a chakras quiz or by which stone you’re gravitating towards), hold the stone and set an intention of how you desire for the stone to be activated. 

Yoga: Yoga is a great physical way to stimulate each chakra. For instance, if your heart chakra is underactive – yoga sequences that incorporate back bends or heart openers can help counter that stagnant energy. Or if your root chakra – associated with grounding – is unbalanced, you can do yoga that places emphasis on connecting to the earth, such as mountain pose and tree pose. After finding out which chakra you want to focus on, ask your instructor about incorporating that body part into a flow. Your Diet: Did you know that what you put into your body could also help balance your chakras? Diet, as always, has a profound effect on your internal system and it’s no different here. To help balance your chakras, focus on the colors of your diet! That is, start increasing the fruits and veggies you consume correlated with the chakra you’re focused on. Essential Oils: By applying essential oils, you’re able to energize underactive chakras or quiet overactive chakras. Again, the key is first to tune into what you need (by your own assessment or a quiz as mentioned earlier) and then get to applying the oil – on or near the bodily location of the chakra.
