In our fast-paced lifestyle, improving your work-life balance seems to have become more challenging than ever before, especially for those working from home and running a business.

It may seem easier to swing from one extreme to the other. However, the danger with working + living this way yields temporary rewards and little satisfaction in the long run. This is why improving your balance between your work and life is important.

1. Practice energy over management.
Audit the things in your work and personal life that demand most of your energy and attention. Look into minimizing those tasks or removing them completely. Track the hours you spend on each activity, then weigh out those things that require too much of you without yielding enough in return. Also, schedule within your work calendar some personal time for yourself. Personal time can look like taking breaks, taking a walk away from the desk, or turning off your screen to give your eyes and brain a rest.

2. Set healthy boundaries at work.
There are many ways to establish boundaries in your work life, but the most important is communicating the time you are taking off-line. When working from home, have a clear start and end time. Let your family know when you expect to be busy. Tell them when you maybe experiencing hectic high peaks of work to lessen distractions and interruptions. Designate a space to rest that’s separate from where you work, like working from your laptop in bed. Who is not guilty of doing that? If you live in a small space, consider rearranging your furniture to distinguish clear areas for work and rest.

3. Stop waiting and start today!
If you’re waiting for the right time for work to allow you to make more time for life, you will be forever waiting. As ambitious people, it’s normal that we prioritize our work, business, and career goals over other things. We push ourselves at work in hopes that when we achieve those goals, we will finally relax and enjoy life. But the truth is, there will rarely ever be a time when you will not be working. You have to intentionally give yourself permission to make time for rest regardless. You have to affirm and accept that you are worthy of rest. Rest even if you haven’t achieved everything you set out to accomplish that day.

Improving your work-life balance is closely correlated to improving your mental health as lowers stress levels and prevents burnout.
