Meet Kim-Julie (@brusselskim), our Woman Crush this Wednesday!

Her name is Kim-Julie and she is the face behind Brussels VeganBest of Vegan, The Vegan Reset and The Vegan Challenge. After years of leading an unhealthy lifestyle, she became an ethical vegan in 2011 and soon also discovered the many health benefits of a plant-based lifestyle. As scary as it seemed then, it was the best decision she ever made. In 2013, she developed a passion for whole foods, which helped her get rid of allergies, chronic migraines, and many other health issues. She started Brussels Vegan and Best of Vegan to show people how easy it can be to change your lifestyle, no matter how hard it may seem in the beginning. In addition to vegan foods, she enjoys doing Yoga, drawing, reading, writing, traveling and spending time with friends and family. She loves helping others make the transition. That is why she wrote the book The Practical Vegan and regularly organizse vegan challenges.

How she practices self-love

1. BE KIND TO YOURSELF
We often talk about self-love and how important it is, but I think that sometimes the concept of loving yourself unconditionally can seem so foreign that we don’t even know where to begin. I believe that paying attention to the way in which we speak to ourselves and about ourselves is crucial. Gently catching the thought patterns that don’t serve us and trying to show ourselves more kindness instead is a great starting point. So, instead of saying “Why did I do that? I can’t believe I failed again…”, try saying “It happened and it’s OK, I’ll be OK. Now, how can I use this experience to learn and grow?”
2. PRIORITIZE YOUR MENTAL HEALTH
At times I feel overwhelmed by the amount of things I have to get done and the pressure I feel to achieve my goals and not disappoint certain people. In those moments, it’s tempting to prioritize impressing other people over making sure you don’t burn out, but at the end of the day, you can’t serve a greater purpose or inspire others if you don’t take care of yourself first. So when I feel like that, I press the pause button and give myself a day or two to recharge in order to prioritize my mental health and overall wellbeing.
3. REFUEL & REGENERATE
I like to refuel my body by staying hydrated and eating an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables. Don’t get me wrong, I love vegan donuts and other treats, but I make sure that most of my diet consists of whole foods and fresh produce as I know that those foods are what makes me feel best. When it comes to regenerating, I make sure I sleep enough, meditate, practice Yoga and spend time going for walks outdoors.

Frank Medrano, our Man Crush Monday this week!

I first got started in calisthenics in 2009. I fell in love with the feeling of true
strength and agility through core and functional body weight exercises because it
carried over into my everyday life. It gave me control of my mind and body and
ultimately gave me strength to master and dominate anything I wished to
accomplish. Eventually in 2011 I adopted a plant -based diet in to my lifestyle. It
took my training and quality of life to new levels. It gave me a better sense of
wellbeing and made me a more compassionate person. It’s a blessing to have been
able to make such a big impact in the fitness community to get more people to
transition into a plant -based lifestyle.

1. I like to reflect and mediate every night at the end of my day. It’s a humbling
experience to remain grateful to live in this world and also important to
gather strength and courage to keep moving forward no matter what
obstacles have come.
2. My body wakes up every morning with a thirst and hunger to improve my
functional abilities by training my body with calisthenics. It helps me create a
sense of wellbeing.
3. I make it my lifestyle to nourish my body and well being with plant based
wholesome foods.

4 ways to veganize your Halloween!

Are you ready for Halloween?

You don’t need to avoid this festivity because of its unhealthy nature, turn it around and make it healthy & vegan! Here are four ideas you can use for your Halloween party to keep it good for the body:

  1. Sweets are a must

Who says you can’t have sugar? Instead of getting the typical candy, just exchange it for real and healthy sugar like fruits! Just look around for the seasonal fruits and give them a spooky twist.

2. Green juices turned spooky

You are usually used to seeing healthy drinks in a vibrant green color, but if you add a bit extra spirulina in them, the green will get a nice swamp-kinda green that will look scary!

3. Don’t forget pumpkin

Pumpkin is the seasonal food you can’t miss! And there are a lot of different ways to use it. One of the easiest is to add a nice spiderweb to your pumpkin soup, pumpkin pie or pumpkin muffins! As easy as that to give a touch of that orange color that defines Halloween.

4. Make the gingerbread man scary

And it’s as easy as adding a skeletton to any human shaped cookie, cake or cupcake. Kids will love it and you can make the desserts as healthy as you want with other vegan recipes.

This way, you will make sure that everyone around you, be it your friends, family or even yourself, doesn’t cheat too much on bad things for your body and can enjoy Halloween in the best way possible.

Always remember to love yourself!

What do you do to veganize Halloween?
